Adventure in China with McCall's Quilting


Travel with Quilting educator Pat Sloan, Sew Many Places founder Jim West and McCall's Quilting Magazine editor, Beth Hayes as they travel to China on this quilting adventure to experience the mysteries of the Orient, from the perspective of a quilter. This 10-day quilting adventure takes place from November 14 - 23, 2008 during which we'll learn about quilting, how silk is made and the history and culture of one of the oldest civilizations in the world.

Friday, November 14
Today we begin our China Quilting Adventure with an overnight flight from San Francisco International Airport to BEIJING, CHINA. During our flight, dinner will be served on-board the plane. D

Saturday, November 15
Forbidden City Tower During our flight this morning, breakfast will be served on-board the plane. This afternoon, we arrive at the BEIJING INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. Once we pass through customs and collect our luggage, we will be met by our local guide who will escort us to our private motor coach. We will travel a short distance to our first-class hotel located in the heart of the city. Once we check into our rooms and get settled, there will be a short briefing with our guide and you will be introduced to Beth Hayes, Pat Sloan and Jim West. We will all enjoy our first Chinese cuisine at a local restaurant. B, D

Sunday, November 16
Forbidden City This morning, following a wonderful buffet breakfast at the hotel, we will depart for TIANANMEN SQUARE and the FORBIDDEN CITY. Following a morning of sightseeing, we will be taken to the SILK MARKET for the afternoon. Here we will have an opportunity to purchase all kinds of designer items-cashmere sweaters for $20.00, high-end watches for $15.00 and designer handbags for only $20.00. Your shopping fantasies come true as you go from floor to floor perusing all the items for sale. Remember, most of what you see and buy is not the authentic thing, so buyers purchase with caution, but have fun while you negotiate the rock bottom price Tonight an authentic Peking Duck dinner awaits us. Following dinner, we will return to our hotel. B, D

Monday, November 17
Chinese Acrobatic Show This morning, following breakfast, we will join Beth and Pat for some quilting fun. This afternoon is free time to enjoy at your leisure. You may opt to visit some of the shops close to our hotel, or book a massage or beauty treatment at the hotel. Whatever you decide to do, enjoy yourself. We will meet for dinner in the early part of the evening. Tonight before dinner, we will enjoy a spectacular world famous CHINESE ACROBATIC SHOW. B, D

Tuesday, November 18
Great Wall of China This morning, following breakfast, we will journey to the incredible GREAT WALL OF CHINA. You won’t believe how spectacular it really is until you have a chance to walk on it yourself. We will stop for lunch at a Friendship store, where we will again have an opportunity to shop in a government-owned store. Later in the day we will visit either a CHILDREN’S PALACE or a CHILDREN’S ELEMENTARY SCHOOL and see first-hand these beautiful children developing their learning abilities. Don’t forget your cameras! Dinner will be at a nearby restaurant, and then we’ll all participate in a group FOOT MASSAGE. This experience is relaxing, great fun and a nice opportunity to be pampered. B, L, D

Wednesday, November 19
Beijing Zoo Panda This morning we will have an early breakfast and then depart for the BEIJING ZOO to see the giant pandas. This is followed by a visit to a SILK SPINNING MILL, where we will see the entire process of how silk fabrics are made. From the silk cocoons to the actual finished product, we’ll see how the silk is spun, dyed and packaged. You’ll have a great opportunity to purchase some uniquely designed silk items. We will also visit on our tour today, a CHINESE CLOISONNE FACTORY, and see how this ancient art is created from start to finish. In the afternoon we will drive to the SUMMER PALACE for a leisurely walk through the gardens near the lake. Finally, in the latter part of the afternoon, we will be brought to DIRT ALLEY for more shopping. Don’t let the name fool you. Dirt Alley is a clean five story indoor market, with all kinds of items from cashmere to Pearls. There are plenty of imitations, so don’t be fooled by the designer names. Tonight, dinner is on your own. B

Thursday, November 20
Terra Cotta Warriors Today is a free day to enjoy at your leisure. We will be offering an optional tour to the city of XIAN to see the famous Terra Cotta Warriors, one of manmade wonders of the world. We will fly early in the morning and upon our arrival, meet a local guide who will bring us to our private motorcoach and take us to this fascinating place. It will be one of the highlights of your trip that is for certain. In the early evening we will fly back to Beijing and transfer to our hotel. Tonight, dinner is on your own. B

Friday, November 21
Rickshaw Ride Today we participate in the ancient Hutong tour and will be peddled around the old section of Beijing in a rickshaw. Midway through the tour, we will stop and have lunch at a local resident’s home. Bring your cameras again, because this will certainly be a special highlight of the trip. Following lunch, the remainder of the afternoon is at your leisure. You may opt to go back to one of the markets for some last-minute shopping, get a massage back at the hotel, or simply walk along the streets near our hotel for a glance at the outdoor food or craft markets. Tonight, dinner is on your own. B, L

Saturday, November 22
This morning following breakfast we will visit the famous TEMPLE OF HEAVEN and leisurely stroll through one of the oldest parks in Beijing. Saturday morning is a great time to visit this area of Beijing, as it brings out many of the local residents, and you will have an opportunity to see firsthand the lifestyle of the Chinese people. The afternoon is free at your leisure. Tonight we will enjoy a relaxing farewell dinner at a local restaurant. B, D

Saturday, November 23
This morning, following a leisurely breakfast, we will pack our luggage as we prepare for our journey back to North America and our non-stop flight back home. B
