GUATEMALA HIGHLIGHTS:

Antigua, Guatamala Play Movie
Antigua is a city in the central highlands of Guatemala famous for its well-preserved Spanish Baroque-influenced architecture as well as a number of ruins of colonial churches. It served as the capital of the Kingdom of Guatemala. It has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Antigua is a growing tourist destination in Guatemala as it is close to Guatemala City but is much calmer. It is possible to take buses from Antigua to many parts of Guatemala, Many of the main areas to visit include: Monterrico beach, Atitlan Lake, Coban, Lanquín, or Tikal. Antigua is also known for its chocolate makers.
Lake Atitlán
Lake Atitlán is the deepest lake in Central America with a maximum depth of about 340 metres (1,120 ft). Atitlán is technically an endorheic lake, feeding into two nearby rivers rather than draining into the ocean. It is shaped by deep surrounding escarpments and three volcanoes on its southern flank. The lake basin is volcanic in origin, filling an enormous caldera formed by an eruption 84,000 years ago.

Lake Atitlán is renowned as one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, and is Guatemala's most important national and international tourist attraction. The lake is surrounded by many villages in which Maya culture is still prevalent and traditional dress is worn.
San Juan La Laguna Play Movie
Just east of San Pedro, on a rise above a spectacular bay, this mellow village has escaped many of the excesses of its neighbors, and some travelers find it a more tranquil setting in which to study Spanish or experience indigenous life. San Juan is special: the Tz'utujil inhabitants take pride in their craft traditions - particularly painting and weaving - and have developed their own tourism infrastructure to highlight these traditions to outsiders.

Perhaps part of what makes it all run so well is the communal spirit: coffee growers, fishers, organic farmers, natural dyers and widows are among the like-minded groups who've formed cooperatives here. As you wander around the village, you'll notice various murals depicting aspects of San Juan life and legend.

WEATHER
The rainy season lasts from June to October and dry season from November to May. But the latter is not free of rainfalls, especially in some regions, most of the time in the afternoon. In the Pacific coast, the hotter weather is often intense with temperatures around 38°C, and high humidity during the heavy rainy season.

CURRENCY
The quetzal is the currency of Guatemala, named after the national bird of Guatemala, the resplendent quetzal.
In ancient Mayan culture, the quetzal bird's tail feathers were used as currency. It is divided into 100 centavos or lenes in Guatemalan slang. The plural is quetzales. Click here for a currency converter.
